May 6: National Nurses Day
May 8: National Student Nurses Day
May 9: National School Nurses Day
The week draws attention to and celebrates the contributions that nurses and nursing make to the community.

Florence Nightengale is hailed by many as the founder of modern nursing. Born in 1820, Nightengale later founded the first secular nursing school. The week of recognition ends on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12.
 

1974 & 1982: President Richard Nixon issued a Presidential proclomation designating a week to celebrate nurses in February 1974. In 1982 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 6 as the "National Recognitinon Day for Nurses".
